Come as you aren't
While celebrating Halloween isn't a big deal in Australia, although it seems to be increasing in commercial if not popular appeal, today always reminds me of ONE THING. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But more the Halloween episodes. And even more specifically, from Season Two. [I probably could have just said that at the beginning]
Their high school principal forces Buffy and the Scoobs to take groups of young kids trick-or-treating. Unbeknownst to our intrepid team, anyone who rented a costume from one particular purveyor of costumery was about to be magically transformed into what they were wearing. Slight scariness and general whackiness ensue.
But I also learned that the costumes people choose to wear on Halloween are about coming as you aren't - being something or someone you are not.
I like the idea that for this one day, you can be someone you are not. But I am pretty sure that you would secretly like to be some part of them. And that's worth exploring.
Some days, I encourage myself to play the Halloween game. Days where I ask myself, "What would not-me do?" and then do that. I scare myself by speaking up more or trying out an idea that might be lame. So that not-me question also turns out to be the question, "What would more-me do?"
Give it a try. You don't need to wait until Halloween. See if someone notices and says, "Who is that girl?" [Yep, that one is for fans]
