Stop thrashing your brain

Apparently [and get ready for a poorly described version of some techy computer stuff which is even worse than my appalling attempts at sporting analogies] when a hard drive is overworked, the data moves in and out between the system memory and the virtual memory. This is called thrashing. It's not good.

Hmmm… That sort of sounds like my brain trying to do too much at once. It is so easy to be distracted by oh so many THINGs.

According to thrashing.com, you can resolve this by:

- increasing the RAM (best long-term option)

- decrease the number of programs running run fewer programs

- use programs that are less memory heavy.

Using this model, it seems I could try

- getting a bigger brain (hmm... not sure how that would work)

- doing fewer THINGs - that would undoubtedly free it up

- finding more efficient ways of working

So stop thrashing your brain and do ONE THING and do it deep. Focus on ONE THING that matters and get good at it by doing it deep. That takes up less working memory and lives in your long term memory, which is pretty darn efficient.
